A characteristic feature of the landscape of the Dönche the cultural and historical grassland society is ponds , reed beds and tall herb communities , brook accompanying alder and ash forests and a Book - wood pasture , where the outdoor laboratory, founded in 1981 is that the biology classes Kassel schools and the training of student teachers serves the biology of the University of Kassel. The dry European heathland is particularly rare .

The fauna of the dönche includes hare , wild rabbit , deer , fox and buzzard . To preserve the open landscape, grazing with domestic sheep and extensive cattle breeds was initiated.

In the nature reserve Dönche there is a marked trails . The area is criss-crossed by walking and hiking trails - but not roads. In 2019 there was a new designation, since then there have been 3 circular trails forest trails (identifier 1, with 2.4 km), landscape change (identifier 2, with 2.3 km) and foresight (identifier 3, with 5.0 km).

history

Horrible memories from the time of National Socialism are also associated with the dönche . It was used as a place of execution by firing squads from the neighboring Liège barracks , who executed deserters there during the Second World War . Part of the dönche used to be used as a military training area, and the many small round pools are the remains of artillery impacts . Today a U-shaped tank ramp, visible from afar, still protrudes.

In 1976 the Dönche was initially designated as a landscape protection area, but in 1980 an area of around 12 hectares was given up again for the documenta urbana construction project . In 1983, a 35 hectare part of the Dönche was designated as a nature reserve, which was enlarged in 1995 to a total of 173 hectares. In 1987 the experiment " The trip to Tahiti " took place in the Dönche .

Danger

Although the Dönche is a nature reserve, many visitors consider it more of an open park . As a result, some visitors do not stick to the given paths (and in the process damage plants and scare off wild animals), ride bicycles on the premises or barbecue there. Since the Hessen-Forst dismantled the rubbish bins on the Dönche, as they were used for the illegal disposal of bulky waste, more and more rubbish has simply been left on the site. In addition, dogs are often not on a leash and thus disturb or injure the ground-breeding bird species (just like free-range cats). Dog excrement also poses a threat to the flora and fauna of the dönche: sheep grazing there can become sick by ingesting the leftovers and excessive nutrient intake (through uncleaned excrement) affects the plants that are used to the nutrient-poor soil. Pollutant inputs also result from agriculture and traffic in the surrounding areas.

In addition to being endangered by humans or domestic animals, invasive species such as raccoons can also threaten the bird and insect populations of the kebab.
