Dönche-The trip to Tahiti

The trip to Tahiti is a social experiment by Lucius Burckhardt . The experiment led to important results in promenadology . The aim is to answer the question of what explorers discover and how to convey an exotic place. The experiment was carried out during documenta 8 .

History and task

The trip to Tahiti is a reconstruction of the trip to Tahiti made by James Cook and Georg Forster in 1773 . The question to be answered is what explorers discover and how do you convey Tahiti.

First execution in the Dönche

The trip to Tahiti was carried out in 1987 on a former military training area in the Dönche near Kassel . At various stages of the walk, actors read texts by Georg Forster , who was in Tahiti with James Cook in 1773. The group members saw the kebabs and heard Tahiti. The descriptions of a paradise island were just as true as the dönche near Kassel. Modeled breadfruit trees and exotic potted plants from a nearby nursery were part of the staging.

Second performance in Milan

The trip to Tahiti was repeated in 1988 in Bovisa , a northern district of Milan with a mixture of industrial wasteland , disused tracks and railway ruins, southern colored flora and remains of cascines and noble villas. With a camera ( souvenir ) labeled “Bovisola”, ten stations could be viewed during the walk. Modeled breadfruit trees and exotic potted plants were also part of the staging here.
