particularities

Steinertseepark , Steinertseebahn

The Steinertsee is an approximately 4.5 hectare open-cast mine in Kaufungen in the northern Hessian district of Kassel .

Geographical location

The Steinertsee lies at the western foot of the Kaufunger Forest in the geo-nature park Frau-Holle-Land (Werratal.Meißner.Kaufunger Wald) . It is located northeast of Niederkaufungen and northwest of Oberkaufungen . To the south past the lake, the Fulda tributary Losse flows in an east-west direction with the parallel Lossetalbahn .

History and description

In the Steinertfeld underground and open-cast mine , the location of the lake basin, lignite was explored and mined from 1955 to 1967. From 1960 to 1968, the approximately 8.7 hectare site was used as a rubbish dump, which caused the communities of Niederkaufungen and Oberkaufungen at that time to have considerable odor nuisances. Ashes and filter dust from the Kassel waste incineration plant were dumped into the pit until 1975 .

In 1971, the recultivation of the pit, which had meanwhile been filled with water, and the adjacent land area began. A total of around 36.7 hectares of leisure, recreation and sports areas, called Steinertseepark , with around 4.5 hectares of water was created. 122 species of birds have settled on the lakeshore and rare amphibians and plants find their habitat in the lakeshore areas and adjacent alluvial forests.

A Nabu protection zone is located directly southeast of the lake .

Hiking and Steinertseebahn

There are bike and walking paths around the Steinertsee. In addition, the Märchenlandweg trail leads past the lake in the north and the Eco Path People and Water in Kaufungen to the north and south of the lake . In the warm season of the year, the Steinertseebahn miniature steam train system operated by the Modellbahnclub Kassel eV runs within the park to the northeast of the lake .
