Oberkaufungen is one of the two districts of the municipality of Kaufungen in the Kassel district in Hesse . The municipal administration is located in the village.

Oberkaufungen is located in the valley of the Losse on the Kaufunger Forest and the Söhre . In the northwest lies the Steinertsee . The place has a train station on the Kassel – Waldkappel railway (built in 1879/80), where the Kassel tram also stops. Federal highway 7 runs south of the village . Oberkaufungen is on the German Fairy Tale Route .

history

The village was first mentioned in a document in 1019 as Overencoufta (Oberkaufungen). Emperor Heinrich II had a Benedictine monastery built between 1014 and 1024 . It existed until 1527. The collegiate church , built in 1025 on a hill, is still preserved . It was consecrated on July 13, 1025.

The voluntary merger of the municipalities of Oberkaufungen and Niederkaufungen to form the large municipality of Kaufungen took place in the course of the regional reform in Hesse on December 1, 1970.

Attractions

The beater and oil mill in house Mühlenweg 6 was built in 1574 and was converted into a grinding mill in 1890. It was operated until the mid-1980s and then converted into a residential building.

There is an integrated comprehensive school in Oberkaufungen .
