The village is located south of the wooded ridge of Hambühlskopf ( 445.2  m above sea level ) in the west and Brandt ( 441.6  m above sea level ) in the east; north of this ridge is the Söhrewald district of Wellerode and down the wattenbach in the south at the confluence with the Mülmisch the district of Eiterhagen .

With the opening of the Söhrebahn on August 21, 1912, dismantling became profitable, as the coal being transported was now carried out smoothly. In addition, the rich basalt deposits could be mined. Wattenbach became a miners' village. The mining in the colliery stopped in 1967. The mining tradition is maintained to this day.

religion

The church (with a late Gothic west tower) dates from 1782. In 1791 it was given today's bonnet. In the church portal there is a large white stone that looks like a turnip. The construction workers are said to have inserted this when the church was being built to indicate the one-sided catering during the construction. The sugar beet harvest is said to have been plentiful in the year it was built. The people of Wattenbach are therefore nicknamed "beet eaters".

Economy and Infrastructure

Since 1997/1998 there has been a wind power park with five wind turbines named "Frau Holle", "Hansel" and "Gretel", "Rumpelstiltskin" and "Snow White" which together generate around 6.8 million  kWh of electricity annually.
