The Stellbergsee , also popularly known as Mondsee (because of its origin from the fallow land of open- cast mining and the formerly corresponding environment), is a 1.4 hectare residual open pit lake in the North Hessian low mountain range Söhre (also called Söhrewald ), i.e. an artificial still water , whose lake basin in the District of Kassel and Schwalm-Eder-Kreis was created by mining .

Geographical location

The Stellbergsee is located in the wooded Söhre on the western border of the Geo-Naturpark Frau-Holle-Land (Werratal.Meißner.Kaufunger Wald) west-southwest of the summit of the Stellberg (approx.  495  m above sea  level ) at 356  m altitude. Around two thirds of the lake area (eastern part) extends over the area of the municipality of Söhrewald (district of Kassel), the rest belongs to the municipality of Guxhagen (Schwalm-Eder district). Wattenbach (to Söhrewald) is about 2.5 km to the east and Wollrode (to Guxhagen) 2.5 km (depending on the beeline) to the west. While the lake is fed by the hillside springs of the Stellberg, it is drained by a stream flowing to the northwest, which flows into the Schwarzenbach after a few hundred meters .

history

As a replacement for the expiring civil engineering on Stellberg, an open-cast mine was set up in 1962 on the former mining area of a tunnel from 1830 . The first overburden of 110,000 m³ came to the outer dump and then to the charred parts of the open pit. The first coal was mined on March 6, 1964, in the power plants Kassel and Borken transported. When the opencast mine was closed on November 30, 1967, 223,000 tons of coal had been produced on the Stellberg.

Only six months later, the mining authority allowed the operator to collect the inflowing surface water, including a spring discharge, to form a lake - the Stellbergsee. When the land was sold to the state of Hesse, the right passed to the state, which at the time was represented by the Hessian Forestry Office Kaufungen . The area currently belongs to the Melsungen Forestry Office.

The "Zweckverband Naturpark Meißner-Kaufunger Wald", based in Witzenhausen, is responsible for maintaining the surrounding area . According to plans of the then Federal Railroad once unsightly slag heaps were reclamation sfähigem soil from the modeled Rail Line Hanover-Würzburg , but as a plane found with a lot more ground, which is why on the uncertain reason, the mass began to slip and filled about a third of the lake.

Leisure and transport links

The Stellbergsee is a popular excursion destination and - although the water quality is only considered satisfactory - it is often visited by bathers who find space on large lawns. Anglers and model boat owners also use the lake, which is popularly known as the Mondsee. The grill hut, which stood in the Wollrode district on the property of the former Stellberg inn , was removed. Sanitary facilities and lifeguards are not available.

In the section between Wattenbach and Wollrode, the state road  3460 leads almost 100 m southwest past the lake , on which there is a parking lot for more than 80 cars near the lake  . There is an SOS emergency call box  ( ) there. A little north past the lake is the Märchenlandweg hiking trail, which connects to the nearby Wildbahn hiking trail .
