Mountain height

The Stellberg is around 495  m high; the information in the referenced table of the eco-path refers to the height in meters above sea level (NN). In the map services of the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation (BfN) a total of three dashed contour lines can be seen above 480  m , so that the top line could stand for 483.25  m and this value for the approximate mountain height; the information provided by the BfN relates to the height in meters above mean sea level (NHN). The often given height of 476 or 476.2  m refers to a measuring point that is about 230 m north of the mountain peak on a branch in the forest.

Geology and history

The Stellberg summit consists of a basalt layer that is no more than 50 m thick , overlying several layers of clay and sandstone below . Underneath, in turn, there are layers of lignite that are interrupted by several faults .

Mining was already practiced around 1800. The dismantling of what is now Stellbergsee ( Zeche Stellberg ) lasted from 1823 to 1967 . The Alte Grube mining area (in the east) was developed in the second half of the 19th century, followed by the Karlsstollen ( Tiefenrod colliery ; in the north) from 1921 to 1930 and the Wiesenschacht (in the south-west) from 1932/33 to 1962 .

Until 1967, the Stellberg in days and underground mining lignite and partly glossy coal mined; the latter was located at the transitions of the brown coal seams to about perpendicular magma - chimneys .

The coal deposit on Stellberg had a volume of an estimated 10 million cubic meters, of which around half was mined. The main buyers were the Kassel thermal power station (until it was converted to hard coal ) and Spinnfaser AG .

The remains of mining include buildings from the former Stellberg and Wattenbach collieries , iron masts and reinforced concrete foundations of a cable car and the Stellbergsee .

Transport links and hiking

State road  3236 ( Wellerode - Wattenbach - Eiterhagen ) runs east past the Stellberg ; this crosses the L 3460 ( Wollrode –Wattenbach– St. Ottilien ) north of Wattenbach , which leads past the mountain to the south. There are three parking spaces for hikers along the L 3460 , from which you can hike to the top of the mountain on forest and forest paths. The Märchenlandweg hiking trail runs over the south and east flanks of the mountain and crosses the Wildbahn hiking trail west-southwest in the direction of the Stellbergsee . The approximately 9.5 km long Eco Path Mining in the Söhre nature trail leads around the mountain , on which you can find out about the mining history of the Stellberg using several display boards along the way.
