The Himmelsberg between Günsterode in the Schwalm-Eder district and Retterode in the neighboring Werra-Meißner district in northern Hesse is 563.7  m above sea level. NN in front of the Pentersrück ( 562.2  m ) the highest peak of the Günsteröder Höhe , the highest and most formative mountain ridge of the Melsunger Bergland .

The Himmelsberg lies on the border between the Schwalm-Eder-Kreis (west) and the Werra-Meißner-Kreis (east) in the height focus of the wooded Günsteröder Höhe, which belongs to the Melsunger Bergland, which is open to the south-southwest in the form of a horseshoe around Günsterode . It rises between the valley of the Essebach with Retterode (to Hessisch Lichtenau ; Werra-Meißner-Kreis) in the east-southeast and that of the Ohebach, which rises to the northwest of the Himmelsberg, with Günsterode (to Melsungen ; Schwalm-Eder-Kreis) in the southwest. The Himmelsberg summit is not only on the district border, but also on the border of the cities of Melsungen and Hessisch Lichtenau. The core city of Melsungen is 12 km southwest, that of Hessisch Lichtenau 2.8 km northeast and that of Spangenberg 7 km (as the crow flies ) south-southwest. An east-southeast spur is called the Breiteberg ( 440.9  m ).

The second highest peak of the Günsteröder height, Pentersrück ( 562.2  m ) is 1.3 km south-southwest and can along the circular boundary on a only about 30 m deep notch can be achieved.

There is a transmission tower about 100 m south-southeast of the Himmelsberg summit .

Natural allocation

The Himmelsberg belongs in the natural spatial main unit group Osthessisches Bergland (No. 35) in the main unit Fulda-Werra-Bergland (357) to the subunit Melsunger Bergland with Günsteröder Höhe (357.6), with its landscape in the subunit Witzenhausen-Altmorschener Talung (357.5) in North-east into the natural area Hessisch-Lichtenau basin (357.51) and in the south-east into the natural area Spangenberger Senke (357.50).

Protected areas

The northeast flank of the Himmelsberg falls into the Fauna-Flora-Habitat- Area Glimmerode and Hambach near Hessisch Lichtenau (FFH No. 4824-308; 7.82  km² ). Parts of the Riedforst bird sanctuary near Melsungen (VSG no. 4823-401; 69.75 km²) are located on the elevation .

Traffic and walking

East past the Himmelsberg along the Essebach the federal road 487 (Hessisch Lichtenau – Retterode – Schnellrode – Spangenberg) and northwest the state road  3147 (Hessisch Lichtenau – Günsterode – Kirchhof –Melsungen). For example, starting at these roads you can go to the mountain on forest and hiking trails. The Brüder-Grimm-Weg and Riedforstweg hiking trails lead over the eastern highlands of the Himmelsberg near the summit .
