history

The place was first mentioned in 1328 under the name Gunsrade . The defensive or church tower was mentioned as early as 1350. In 1527 the place was raised to an independent parish .

During the Thirty Years War the place was devastated in 1637. The parish lost its independence in 1672 and was assigned to the Quentel parish .

In the 19th century there lived in Günsterode charcoal burners who burned charcoal in the surrounding forests . As a result, the place quickly grew to over 500 inhabitants. In 1852 there were ten full-time charcoal burners. After the utility forest was dissolved in 1870, charcoal burning fell sharply. In the following years the population became impoverished. Many residents emigrated to the Ruhr area and hired themselves there as miners. The place did not regain its old population of over 500 until the beginning of the 21st century.

The village school was built in the center of the village in 1876, and a new school building was needed as early as 1901, which was built on the outskirts on the road to Hessisch Lichtenau. The village school was closed in 1970. Since then the school-age children have been going to school in Melsungen.

In a fire in the home of the mayor at the time, old local chronicles and documents were destroyed in 1910.

Günsterode was electrified in 1924, followed by the construction of a water supply system in 1928, which was renewed in the 1970s.

With the incorporation in the course of the regional reform in Hesse into the city of Melsungen, Günsterode lost its status as an independent municipality on February 1, 1971.
