The Pentersrück between Schnellrode in the Schwalm-Eder district and Günsterode in the neighboring Werra-Meißner district in northern Hesse is 562.2  m above sea level. NN after the Himmelsberg ( 563.7  m ) the second highest peak of the Günsteröder Höhe , the highest and most distinctive ridge of the Melsunger Bergland .

The Pentersrück lies in the Schwalm-Eder-Kreis (west) and in the Werra-Meißner-Kreis (east) in the height focus of the wooded Günsteröder Höhe, which belongs to the Melsunger Bergland, which is open to the south-southwest in the form of a horseshoe around Günsterode . It rises between the valley of the Essebach with Schnellrode (to Spangenberg ; Schwalm-Eder-Kreis) in the south-southeast and Retterode (to Hessisch Lichtenau ; Werra-Meißner-Kreis) in the northeast and that of the Ohebach with Günsterode (to Melsungen ; Schwalm-Eder Circle) in the west. The Pentersrück summit is located around 250 m southwest of the district boundary in the urban area of ​​Spangenberg. The core town of Melsungen is 11 km southwest, that of Spangenberg 5.8 km south-southwest and that of Hessisch Lichtenau 4 km (as the crow flies ) north-northeast. On the eastern flank of the mountain lies the Haukerode desert . An east- south-eastern spur is called the Steinkopf ( 406.6  m ).

The highest peak of Günsteröder height, Himmelberg , is 1.3 km north-northeast and is along the circular boundary with a barely 30 meters deep notch be achieved.

Protected areas

Parts of the fauna-flora-habitat area Riedforst near Melsungen (FFH no. 4823-301; 20.54  km² ) are located on the south-western areas of the Pentersrück, and on the entire elevation there are those of a bird sanctuary of the same name (VSG no. 4823-401; 69.75 km²).

Observation tower

A lookout tower was built on the Pentersrück in 1894 , from which one could see, for example , the Kaufunger Wald and Hohen Meißner beyond the Hessisch-Lichtenau basin . The tower was demolished because it was in disrepair and not renewed.

Traffic and walking

The federal highway 487 (Hessisch Lichtenau-Retterode-Schnellrode-Spangenberg) runs east past the Pentersrück along the Essebach and to the west the state road  3147 (Hessisch Lichtenau-Günsterode- Kirchhof- Melsungen). For example, starting at these roads you can go to the mountain on forest and hiking trails. The Brüder-Grimm-Weg and Riedforstweg hiking trails lead over the Pentersrück .
