Great cap

The Great Cap is at least 572.5  m above sea level. NHN high eastern foothills of the Bilstein ( 641.2  m ), the second highest mountain in the Kaufungen forest . It is located near Großalmerode on the eastern edge of the Kaufunger Wald estate in the Werra-Meißner district in northern Hesse .

Geographical location

The Great Cap rises in the Geo-Nature Park Frau-Holle-Land (Werratal.Meißner.Kaufunger Wald) . Its summit is 3.3 km north-northeast of the core town of Großalmerode and 3.5 km south of Roßbach and 3.6 km south-south-west of Dohrenbach , two Witzenhausen districts; the core city of Witzenhausen is 7.4 km north-northeast. About 730 meters southeast of the summit is known as Natural Monument designated Red Lake , a former basalt quarry , and in the eastern Gelster runs tal 2.8 km from the summit, the federal highway 451 . Parts of the fauna-flora-habitat area Werra- and Wehretal (FFH no. 4825-302; 244.8191  km² ) spread out on the fully wooded hilltop . To the north, the 463.5  m high small cap extends as a long branch .

Natural allocation

The Great Cap, like the Bilstein, belongs to the natural spatial main unit group Osthessisches Bergland (No. 35) and in the main unit Fulda-Werra-Bergland (357) to the natural areas Hinterer Kaufunger Wald (357.72) in the north and Kaufunger Wald-Hochfläche ( Vorderer Kaufunger Wald) (357.71) in the south; the border between the two natural areas belonging to the Kaufunger Wald and Söhre subunit (357.7) runs over both peaks.

Mountain height

The Great Cap is at least 572.5  m above sea level. NHN high. A few meters northeast of its summit, the topographic map services of the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation (BfN) show a 570.8  m high elevation on a forest path / path , which is usually given as around 571  m .

Flowing waters

The source of the western arm of the (second) Fahrenbach can be found on the north-eastern slope of the Große cape about 350 m north of the Red Lake at 540  m altitude . The source of the Mittelbach is located at the foot of the north-western slope about 400 m from the summit at about 440  m altitude.
