Cochlostoma nanum , also uncommonly called dwarf forest snail, is a species of snail from the family of forest snails (Cochlostomatidae) in the order Architaenioglossa ("old bandworm")that lives on land.
features
The right-hand wound case is 6.5 to 8.1 mm high and 3.3 to 3.8 mm wide. It is conical to oblong-conical with a relatively thick thread and a blunt apex. It has 7 to 8 arched turns, which are separated from one another by a comparatively deep seam. The surface is covered with narrow, low ribs; the end turn is fine and closely striped. The ribs and stripes are a little lighter. They are crooked and are clearly curved on the last turn. The end turn is rounded at the bottom, or is indistinct and slightly shouldered. It is widened towards the mouth and rises relatively quickly, but less than up to ⅓ the height of the penultimate turn. The mouth is rounded-ovoid in the frontal view. The edge of the mouth is slightly or significantly doubled and clearly recedes below. The inside hem is narrowed like a callous. The outer hem is thin and sharp. It is turned narrow to wide on the outside. The spindle edge is clearly "eyed".
The housing monochrome reddish-horn-colored, or red-brown banded, e.g. T. gray-blue frosted. On the last turn there are usually three bands that consist of more or less connected spots.
Geographical distribution and habitat
The distribution area extends from southeastern Austria ( Carinthia ) via Slovenia to Croatia . She lives there on rock walls.
Taxonomy
The taxon was first described in 1879 by Carl Agardh Westerlund as Pomatias nanus Westerlund, in 1879. Today the species is assigned to the subgenus Cochlostoma (Turritus) .
The fauna Europaea divides the species into two subspecies:
- Cochlostoma (Turritus) nanum nanum (Westerlund, 1879)
- Cochlostoma (Turritus) nanum dubium (AJ Wagner, 1897). The housing is monochrome yellowish to reddish horn brown. The ribs are stronger and higher. The inner edge of the mouth is greatly thickened and doubled. The outer edge of the mouth is very wide and thick. Occurrence: Trnovac , Croatia
Danger
According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN), the species is considered not endangered (“Least Concern”). It is protected by law in Croatia.
