Lorenzo Girolamo Mattei

Lorenzo Girolamo Mattei (born May 28, 1748 in Rome , † July 24, 1833 there ) was an Italian cardinal of the Roman Church .

Life

Lorenzo Girolamo Mattei was the second of four children of Prince Girolamo Mattei and his second wife Maria Caterina Altieri. His brother Alessandro became a cardinal in 1779, both nephews of the cardinals Luigi Mattei and Vincenzo Maria Altieri . In 1771 Mattei became a canon of the Vatican Basilica and remained so until his death. He was ordained a priest on June 13, 1772, after which he became a trainee lawyer at the tribunals of the Apostolic Signature . In 1787 he was appointed House Prelate of His Holiness . He became secretary of the Congregation for Indulgences and Holy Relics and canons of the Papal Lateran Basilica . On December 29, 1801, by special grace from the Pope, he was awarded the degree of Doctor iuris utriusque .

On September 27, 1822, Lorenzo Girolamo Mattei was appointed Latin Patriarch of Antioch . The episcopal ordination donated him two days later, the dean of the College of Cardinals , and Cardinal Bishop of Ostia e Velletri Giulio Maria della Somaglia ; Co- consecrators were the Archbishops of the Curia, Gianfrancesco Falzacappa and Antonio Baldini . In 1826 he refused an appeal to the Archbishopric of Ferrara .

Pope Gregory XVI appointed him in the consistory of April 15, 1833 cardinal priest , he received the cardinal's hat on April 18 of the same year. He died before the consistory of July 29, 1833, in which his titular church was to be announced, on the afternoon of July 24, 1833 and was buried in the Cappella Mattei of the Church of Santa Maria in Aracoeli .
