On June 1, 1795, Antonio Despuig became Archbishop of Valencia , where he had already taken office the previous year after the arrest of his predecessor Francisco Fabián y Fuero . In January 1799 he appointed him Latin Patriarch of Antioch .
Pope Pius VII accepted him in the consistory of July 11, 1803 as cardinal priest of San Callisto in the college of cardinals . In 1809 he was expelled from Rome by the French under Napoleon Bonaparte . Because of his poor health, the emperor allowed him to return to Italy in 1810. In the same year he was appointed treasurer of the Holy College of Cardinals by Pius VII . Cardinal Despuig retired to Lucca, where he died in 1813. In 1993 his bones were transferred to Palma de Mallorca.
