Life

Antonio Despuig y Dameto was born the son of the Spanish Count Ramón Despuig and initially taught at a Jesuit school. From 1762 he studied philosophy and canon law at the University of Mallorca . After he was ordained a subdeacon in 1771, he was ordained a priest on July 3, 1774 . In 1783 Despuig became rector of the University of Mallorca. For the Kingdom of Aragón he was appointed auditor at the Roman Rota in May 1785 .

Pope Pius VI appointed him Bishop of Orihuela on September 26, 1791 . He received the episcopal ordination three days later by Cardinal Francesco Saverio de Zelada ; Co- consecrators were Francesco Saverio Passari , titular archbishop of Larissa in Thessalia , and Gregorio Bandi , titular archbishop of Edessa in Osrhoëne . On June 1, 1795, Antonio Despuig became Archbishop of Valencia , where he had already taken office the previous year after the arrest of his predecessor Francisco Fabián y Fuero . Since the situation for him in Valencia was troubled, he was transferred to the Archdiocese of Seville in December 1795. King Charles IV sent him in 1796 on a diplomatic mission to Pius VI. In January 1799 he appointed him Latin Patriarch of Antioch .

Pope Pius VII accepted him in the consistory of July 11, 1803 as cardinal priest of San Callisto in the college of cardinals . In 1809 he was expelled from Rome by the French under Napoleon Bonaparte . Because of his poor health, the emperor allowed him to return to Italy in 1810. In the same year he was appointed treasurer of the Holy College of Cardinals by Pius VII . Cardinal Despuig retired to Lucca, where he died in 1813. In 1993 his bones were transferred to Palma de Mallorca.
