Luis María de Borbón y Vallabriga (born May 22, 1777 in Cadalso de los Vidrios , † March 19, 1823 in Madrid ) was Cardinal and Archbishop of Toledo . He was also by inheritance in the years 1794-1803 bearer of the title of Count of Chinchón .

biography

The son of the Infante Luis de Borbón y Farnesio , the youngest brother of the Spanish King Charles III. , was raised by monks in Toledo after the early death of his father . Ordained a priest on March 13, 1799 , he was made Archbishop of Seville on March 15, 1799 . After the Patriarch of the West Indies , Cardinal Antonio Sentmanat y Castellá , had donated him episcopal ordination on June 2, 1799 , Pope Pius VII appointed him cardinal on October 20, 1800 at the age of only 23, and on the same day cardinal priest of Santa Maria della Scala . As early as December 22nd, 1800, he was promoted to Archbishop of Toledo , and remained Apostolic Administrator for the Archdiocese of Seville until 1814 .

During the French occupation of Spain (1808-1813) he was the only member of the royal family who remained in the country. He became president of the Regency of Cadiz and sanctioned in 1812 the decrees of the Constituent Assembly of Cortes . In 1814 he received the returning king in Valencia , soon fell from grace and was banished to his diocese and robbed of the administration and income of the diocese of Toledo. On December 19, 1814, he resigned as Archbishop of Toledo.

But after the revolution of March 1820, the king appointed him president of the Spanish government junta. After the constitutional government was fully organized, he joined the Council of State, but died on March 19, 1823 at the age of only 46. He was buried in the Cathedral of Toledo .
