Giuseppe Firrao (born July 20, 1736 in Fagnano Castello , † January 24, 1830 in Naples ) was an Italian cardinal .

Life

He was born in Fagnano Castello ( Calabria ) as the son of Pier Maria Firrao, Prince of Sant'Agata and Luzi, and Livia Grillo di Agapito, Duchess of Mondragone and Countess of Carinola, and was a great-nephew of the elder Cardinal Giuseppe Firrao ( 1670-1744). He studied in Naples, moved to the study of humanities to the Collegio Nazareno and was on 25 April 1756 of the La Sapienza University in canon law and civil law for Doctor iuris utriusque doctorate . He received minor orders and was ordained a subdeacon on March 11, 1775 . After that he was the private treasurer of Pope Clement XIII. and from July 1756 trainee lawyer at the Tribunal of the Apostolic Signature . From December 1759 he was a relator at the Dombauhütte of St. Peter . In January 1761 he was appointed vice- legate in the Romandiola , a position he held until December 8, 1766. Since July 1766 he was also relator of the Sacra Consulta and in 1781 its dean. On March 10, 1782 he received the deacon and on March 16, 1782 the priestly ordination .

On February 25, 1782 Firrao had been appointed titular archbishop of Petra in Palestine . He was ordained bishop on March 31, 1782 in the Church of Santa Maria ad Martyres in Rome by Cardinal Innocenzo Conti ; Co-consecrators were the Curia Archbishops Orazio Mattei and Girolamo Volpi . Giuseppe Firrao (1736-1830) was appointed on April 8, 1782 as nuncio to Venice .

Pope Pius VII appointed him cardinal priest of Sant'Eusebio in the consistory of February 23, 1801 . From 1802 to 1803 he was treasurer of the Holy College of Cardinals . He took part in the conclave in 1823 and in the conclave in 1829 .

The cardinal died in Naples at the age of 93 and was buried in the Naples Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta .
