Titular Archbishopric of Petra in Palestine

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Petra in Palestine ( Italian Petra di Palestina ) is a titular archbishopric of the Roman Catholic Church .

The ancient and early modern (arch) bishop's seat was in the eponymous city of Petra in today's Jordan, after which the ecclesiastical province of Petra was named, also called Arabia secunda . The suffragan dioceses Aela , Arad , Areopolis , Arindela , Bacatha in Palestine , Charac-Moba and Elusa belonged to the ancient and early modern archdiocese .

This archbishopric went under with the suffragan dioceses after the Arab conquest in 636. When the crusaders arrived, the city of Petra was no longer inhabited either. In 1168 a new Archdiocese of Petra was founded, which was supposed to connect as a diocese to the ancient Palestine Salutaris . At that time, however, it only included the rule of Oultrejordain (essentially the areas around Montreal and Kerak in present-day Jordan). Since the eponymous Petra was uninhabited, the seat of the archbishopric was established in Kerak. The Archbishop of Petra was a suffragan of the Patriarch of Jerusalem and had only one suffragan himself, the Greek Orthodox Abbot of the Katharinen Monastery on Mount Sinai - even if the influence of the Crusaders seldom reached there. With the conquest of Kerak by the Muslims in 1189, this bishopric also went under again. The title of archbishop was apparently still awarded into the 13th century (15th century?) ( Archiepiscopus in partibus infidelium ).

In the 17th century, the titular Archbishopric of Petra was founded, which consisted only of the title Archbishop of Petra.
