Francesco Saverio de Zelada (born August 27, 1717 in Rome , † December 19, 1801 there ) was a cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church .

Life

He was born to a Spanish family who chose him for a career as a bureaucrat and diplomat for the papal curia . With this goal in mind, he studied both law at La Sapienza University . He was ordained a priest on October 23, 1740. He began his career at the Roman Curia in 1742 as a consultant at the Apostolic Signature . In March 1760 he became an auditor of the Roman Rota . On December 23, 1766 he was named titular archbishop of Petra . He was ordained bishop on December 28, 1766 in the chapel of the Quirinal Palace Pope Clement XIII. personally, co-consecrators were the Archbishops of the Curia, Scipione Borghese and Ignazio Reali .

In the consistory of April 19, 1773 he was created by Pope Clement XIV as cardinal priest of San Martino ai Monti . In 1793 he took over the titular church of Santa Prassede . He was the main negotiator of the Holy See of his time and author of the Bull Dominus ac Redemptor of July 21, 1773, which outlawed the Society of Jesus .

His career culminated in his appointment by Pope Pius VI. for Cardinal Secretary of State (1789-1796). After Pius' death, Zelada took part in the conclave 1799-1800 , which Pius VII chose. As the librarian of the Holy Roman Church (December 15, 1779 until his death), Cardinal Zelada was a great collector of books, as well as coins and medals and other works of art.

He was buried in his former Roman titular church, San Martino ai Monti .
