Darius Boyd (born July 17, 1987 in Brisbane , Queensland ) is an Australian rugby league player. He began his career in 2006 with the Brisbane Broncos in the NRL , for which he played until 2008 and with which he won the NRL in 2006 . He has been under contract with them again since 2015, in between he played for the St. George Illawarra Dragons , with whom he won the NRL in 2010 and the World Club Challenge in 2011 , and the Newcastle Knights . In 2010 he won the Clive Churchill Medal as Man of the Match in the NRL Grand Final .

Boyd played for the Australian national team between 2008 and 2014 , with whom he won the Rugby League World Cup in 2013 and the Four Nations in 2011 . Also since 2008 he has played for the Queensland Maroons in the State of Origin Series , which he has won nine times with them.

Career

After his birth, Boyd grew up first with his mother and later with his grandmother. He first played rugby for the junior club Mudgeeraba Redbacks before starting to play for his school, Palm Beach Currumbin High School. In 2005 he played for the Australian Schoolboys as a goalkeeper and made his debut for the Burleigh Bears in the Queensland Cup .

Brisbane Broncos

In 2006 Boyd made his NRL debut for the Brisbane Broncos in Round 1 against the North Queensland Cowboys , in which he put a try . He played in the outer three-quarter position for most of the season, but was also used as a goalkeeper in some games when Karmichael Hunt was injured. In total, he completed 27 games in his first season, in which he put 11 attempts. He won the NRL Grand Final with the Broncos against the Melbourne Storm 15: 8 and received the Broncos Rookie of the Year award, an internal team award for the best new player.

In 2007 he took part with the Broncos in the World Club Challenge against the Super League champions St Helens . The game ended at 18:14 for St Helens, with Boyd putting in a try for the Broncos. In the NRL he completed 22 games that year, in which he placed 7 attempts.

At the beginning of the 2008 season, he scored a hat trick in a game against the Penrith Panthers . In May, the interest of other NRL clubs in him rose, as his contract would expire after the end of the season. There was speculation about whether he would join the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs like his teammates Michael Ennis and Ben Hannant , or whether he would join the St. George Illawarra Dragons like Brisbane's trainer Wayne Bennett . He played for the Queensland Maroons in Game 2 and 3 of the State of Origin Series , in Game 2 he put two tries.

On August 20, 2008, he signed a three-year contract with the St. George Illawarra Dragons , where Nick Emmett and trainer Wayne Bennett had also moved. He finished his final season with the Broncos with 24 games in which he had placed 13 attempts. On October 16, he was included in the roster of the Australian national team for the Rugby League World Cup 2008 , as Justin Hodges could not participate due to a shoulder injury. His debut was against Papua New Guinea .

St. George Illawarra Dragons

Boyd's debut for the Dragons was in Round 1 against the Melbourne Storm . In Round 4, the Dragons beat Brisbane at Suncorp Stadium 25:12 and inflicted their first loss on the Broncos in 2009. On May 8th, 2009 he won the traditional ANZAC test match with Australia against New Zealand 38:10, he put among other things a try.

In April, Boyd was inducted into the Queensland Maroons roster for the 2009 State of Origin Series, this time playing in all three games, including a try in Game 1. In round 20 of the NRL he put his first try for the Dragons against the New Zealand Warriors . He finished the season with two attempts from 22 games.

In 2010 he again took part in all three games of the State of Origin Series and put a try in each game. He won the NRL Grand Final with the Dragons against the Sydney Roosters 32: 8 and received the Clive Churchill Medal as Man of the Match . He was voted Fullback of the Year at the Dally M Awards . He finished the season with two tries out of 25 games. After the end of the season he took part with Australia in the Four Nations 2010 and received the Fullback of the Year award from the RLIF .

In 2011 Boyd won the World Club Challenge with the Dragons against the Wigan Warriors at 21:15. On March 30, Wayne Bennett announced that he would no longer coach the Dragons in 2012, which led to offers from other clubs to Boyd, as he had already indicated that if Bennett did so he would leave the Dragons. After Bennett signed a four-year deal with the Newcastle Knights , he received inquiries from the Newcastle Knights and the Gold Coast Titans . On May 9, the Titans announced that they were no longer interested in Boyd, so he could choose between joining the Knights and the Dragons. On June 9, he signed a four-year contract with the Knights.

He again took part in all three games of the State of Origin Series and ended the season with 9 attempts from 22 games. In a test match against New Zealand, which took place at Hunter Stadium , he made two attempts. He played with Australia in all four games of the Four Nations 2011 , including the 30-8 final win over England .

Boyd's debut for the Knights was as a goalkeeper in Round 1 against the St. George Illawarra Dragons . With Australia he took part in the ANZAC test , which Australia won at Eden Park 20:12. He also took part for the third year in a row in all three games of the State of Origin Series. In round 21 he put his first try for the Knights against the Canberra Raiders . He finished the season with 3 tries in 22 games. After the season ended, he played for the Prime Minister's XIII , a selection of NRL players whose teams failed to make the playoffs or were eliminated early, who play against Papua New Guinea every year. On October 30, he won a friendly with Australia against New Zealand 18:10.

In 2013 he again took part in the ANZAC Test against New Zealand and in all three games of the State of Origin Series. In the Series, he was the player with the most attempts with three attempts. He finished his second season with the Knights with 11 tries in 26 games. In October 2013, he was inducted into the Australian squad for the 2013 Rugby League World Cup . He completed five World Cup games in which he put four attempts. In the final he won with Australia 34-2 against New Zealand.

In 2014 he took part in the ANZAC Test against New Zealand for the fourth time, which Australia won 30:18. In round 13 he completed his 200th NRL game against the Wests Tigers . He took part in all three State of Origin games for the fifth time, placing two attempts in Game 1 and one in Game 3.

On July 23, he admitted himself to a clinic because of depression . On August 14th, his three-week treatment was over and he left the clinic. He played no more games for the Knights for the rest of the year, as he focused on his recovery and also announced that he would move to another club for the next season. In conversation was among other things his old club, the Brisbane Broncos , which were trained by Wayne Bennett again.

Return to the Broncos

On October 31, Boyd's contract with the Knights expired, after which he signed a three-year contract with the Broncos on November 21.

On December 5, he injured his Achilles tendon during training , which is why it was assumed that he would not be able to play for at least the next six months, possibly the entire season. All the more surprising was his return in Round 10 against the North Queensland Cowboys . Recovering from his injury much faster than expected, Mal Meninga added him to the Queensland Maroons roster for the 2015 Series despite missing out on much of the NRL season.
