Pietro Bettelini

Pietro Antonio Leone Bettelini (born September 6, 1763 in Caslano , Switzerland ; died September 27, 1829 in Rome ) was a Swiss painter and engraver .

Life

Pietro Bettelini was a student of Gaetano Gandolfi in Bologna and of the engraver Francesco Bartolozzi in London . He stayed in Paris, returned to Ticino and moved to Milan, where in 1806 he received a first price at the Brera for an engraving after Bartolomeo Schedoni . He then went to Rome , where he worked until his death. Bettelini became a member of the Accademia di San Luca and taught etching on it.

Bettelini made engravings of many well-known paintings, for example by Andrea del Sarto , Guido Reni , Antonio da Correggio , Guercino and Tizian as well as sculptures by Antonio Canova and Bertel Thorwaldsen . His reproductions achieved high editions well into the 19th century, sometimes also in multi-color printing.
