The Hungarian Football League (HFL) is the highest league for American football in Hungary and is organized by the Hungarian association Magyar Amerikai Futball Szövetség (MAFSZ). Like the leagues that follow, it is played on an amateur basis.

history

The Magyarországi Amerikai Futballcsapatok Ligája was held for the first time in 2005 with 4 teams (Budapest Wolves, Győr Sharks, Debrecen Gladiators, Nagykanizsa Demons). The Budapest Wolves won the first Hungarian Bowl.

In the next two years the Wolves only played in the Austrian league. The Győr Sharks won these events. In 2006, 8 teams took part in the league. A second league had to be created the following year, with 6 teams playing in the first and 9 teams in the second division.

The Wolves returned in 2008 and won 3 unbeaten championships. In 2009 the competition already had 26 teams and a third division had to be introduced. However, they returned to the 2-league system in the following year.

In 2011, the association restructured the format with the introduction of the Hungarian Football League, which was to be played in autumn. Divisions I and II became the second and third division and were played out in the spring. The majority of the teams spoke out against this format and so the Hungarian Bowl was not held this year. Instead, there was a Fall Bowl this year.

In the following year the HFL was started and in this season the Budapest Wolves should take their first defeat against a Hungarian team (Budapest Hurricanes) in their club history. In the final, the Wolves could still win against the Hurricanes. Only in the following years were the Hurricanes (2013), the Újbuda Rebels (2014) and the Bratislava Monarchs (2015) teams able to prevail against the Wolves in the Hungarian Bowl. 2015 was the first season in which a foreign team took part in the competition and with the victory of the Monarchs in the final, the Wolves became the defeated final team to the Hungarian champions.

In 2016 the Miskolc Steelers became the first team outside Budapest in the history of the HFL to take part in the finals. This they were able to win promptly and became the sixth team in the sixth season that the HFL could win. The following year, the Budapest Cowbells won what appeared to be the seventh team, but the team emerged from the Újbuda Rebels, which made them the first team to win the HFL for the second time.
