The Lille Métropole Stadium is a stadium located in Villeneuve-d'Ascq in the Lille metropolitan area , France . Located in the 5 hectare Olympique de Lille Est sports complex with three grass and one artificial grass pitch , a gym and part of the youth department of the Lille OSC .

history

The stadium before the eighth finals of the UEFA Europa League OSC Lille against Liverpool FC in March 2010

It was originally designed as an athletics stadium and opened in 1976. At that time the facility offered space for 35,000 spectators. The architect Roger Taillibert , who also planned the Olympic facilities in Montreal and the Paris Prinzenparkstadion , designed the sports facility. Today the stadium has 17,754 seats.

After it opened, there was only minor work on the stadium in the 1980s and 1990s. The venue was renovated in 2004 and now had 21,650 seats. In 2006 the name was changed from Stadium Nord de Villeneuve d'Ascq to the name Stadium Nord Lille Métropole, which was valid until 2012 . The addition North was deleted from the name, so that it is now only called Stadium Lille Métropole. In 2007 two large video screens were installed.

The arena was the home of ES Wasquehal from 1997 to 2005 and the OSC Lille from 2004 to 2012, as Lille's previous home stadium ( Stade Grimonprez-Jooris ) was out of date. There were plans to renovate the Grimonprez-Jooris . In January 2007, however, after a legal dispute over the building permit , it was decided to demolish the stadium. A completely new stadium called Grand Stade Lille Métropole (from mid-2013: Stade Pierre-Mauroy ) and around 50,000 seats was built, which opened in August 2012.
