With a lightning start, the New Zealanders underpinned their role as favorites early on. After just 20 minutes they were leading 38-0 and then took the pace out of the game without losing control. But even then, the overwhelmed Italians were unable to put pressure on the New Zealand defensive. In the second round, the spectators saw the same thing. The All Blacks finally won with 76:14. Doug Howlett achieved a hat trick with three valid attempts and closed up to Christian Cullen with his 46th attempt in the national jersey .

The Italians took the lead again after a short time through an attempt with a successful increase. In the further course, both teams screwed the score to 24:18 with various converted penalties. On the side of the victorious Italians, Verbinder Ramiro Pez was the match winner with three penalties converted in the second half.

The New Zealand selection, which competed with a B team, had an easy game against the Portuguese. In the first round, the All Blacks made eight attempts, five of them between the 25th and 34th minute. This led to a 52-3 halftime score. Gonçalo Malheiro scored Portugal's honorary points with a drop goal, the first in the course of the World Cup. The same picture emerged in the second half, when New Zealand again put eight attempts into the opposing in-goal and ended the game with a 108-13 victory.

The Italians had more problems than expected when they beat the Portuguese in their first World Cup participation. Italy took the lead after just four minutes of play, but instead of the expected slump, the Portuguese held a remarkable 5:13 into stoppage time in the first half after losing 83-0 to Italy in qualifying for the World Cup . It was not until the 65th minute that the Italians were able to extend their 16: 5 half-time lead, with one of four converted penalties by David Bortolussi . Two more attempts within the last eight minutes finally screwed the result to a clear 31: 5 victory for the Italians.

The All Blacks also won clearly in their third match . The Scots mostly used their reserve players to spare the regular formation before the decisive game for the quarter-finals against Italy. After a hard-fought first round, the New Zealanders led 20-0 after early attempts by Richie McCaw and Doug Howlett . In the second round, too, both teams initially gave each other little space. It was only when the Scots' strength waned towards the end of the game that New Zealand's offensive had an easy time and decided the game with three attempts within twelve minutes. The third clear victory gave the All Blacks an early entry into the quarter-finals with a flawless record of 15 points.

Despite being in the lead twice, World Cup newcomers Portugal lost to the Romanians in a game that could hardly be surpassed in terms of tension. The Portuguese achieved the first points of the game through an attempt by Joaquim Ferreira . They defended the resulting 7-0 lead until half-time. The Romanians didn't score their first points until the middle of the second half when Marius Tincu equalized the game. Only six minutes later Portugal took the lead again, but Romania responded with the second attempt, which finally sealed the narrow 14:10 victory. The Portuguese recorded their first World Cup point due to the narrow defeat.

The New Zealanders also won the fourth game against Romania without any problems. Already in the first minute of the game Sitiveni Sivivatu scored the first attempt for the All Blacks , which was followed by five more in the further course of the first half. In the 31st minute, the Romanians scored their only attempt at the game. After the 36-5 half-time lead, the Eastern Europeans initially acted a little more compactly on the defensive in the second round and held out with all their might against the New Zealand offensive. Only when the forces slowly waned from the 60th minute onwards, New Zealand came to further attempts. Nick Evans set the final point at 85: 8 with a raise after an attempt by Isaia Toeava . The most successful All Black was Joe Rokocoko , who managed a hat trick .
