Jerry Collins (born November 4, 1980 in Apia , Samoa , † June 5, 2015 in Montpellier , France ) was a New Zealand rugby union player who played in the position of winger for RC Narbonne . He played 48 caps for the All Blacks . He was known for his physical style of play and was considered one of the best players in the world in his position.

Career

Collins won the Junior World Championship in 1999 with the New Zealand U-19 national team.

Collins made his debut for the national team on June 23, 2001 in the game against Argentina and formed a successful duo in the third row with Richie McCaw in the following years . Almost exactly five years after his debut, on June 24, 2006, he first played as captain of the All Blacks, again against Argentina. At the 2007 World Cup he was captain twice in the group matches against Portugal and Romania .

On May 26, 2008, Collins surprisingly announced the end of his career in New Zealand. He had previously stressed that he wanted to stay for several more years to prepare for the 2011 World Cup . He moved to France to the newly promoted RC Toulon , who was trained by his former national team mate and cousin Tana Umaga . After the 2008/09 season he moved to Wales for the Ospreys .

He played for Yamaha Júbilo in Japan for two years from 2013 before moving to RC Narbonne in the French second division in January 2015 .

Collins died in a car accident on the motorway west of Béziers in the Hérault department, along with his wife. His three-month-old daughter was admitted to hospital seriously injured.
