Mauro Bergamasco (born May 1, 1979 in Padova ) is a former Italian rugby union player who was active for Stade Français and the Italian national team . He played in the winger's position .

Bergamasco comes from a rugby-loving family, his father Arturo was also a winger for Italy and his brother Mirco plays with him at Stade Français and in the national team. He started rugby at the age of five with the Selvazzano Rugby club , which was coached by his father. His nickname gioiellino (little gem) comes from his early days as a professional at Petrarca Rugby Padova . He got it because he was the club's youngest player but had already played an international match for Italy against the Netherlands . In 2000 he moved to Treviso , after three seasons and two championships there, he moved to France to Stade Français, where he has won the French championship three times and was in the final of the Heineken Cup once .

Bergamasco was part of Italy's squad for the first Six Nations , which has existed since 2000 when Italy added the Five Nations. He was used in all games in this tournament and has been one of the pillars of the Italian squad ever since. So he took part in the World Championships in 2003 and 2007 , in which the Azzurri could win two games, but did not reach the quarter-finals. At the Six Nations 2009 he was used by national coach Nick Mallett in the opening game against England in the unfamiliar position of the scrum half . He could not get by in this position and made several capital mistakes for the clear defeat of Italy. Mallett was then criticized for this decision, and Bergamasco has been back as a winger since then.
