Union Bordeaux Bègles is a rugby union team from the French city of Bordeaux in the Gironde department . It is a 2006 merger of the professional teams of Stade Bordelais and CA Bordeaux-Bègles Gironde . The team is represented in the top 14 league and plays its home games at the Stade André-Moga in Bègles .

history

In 2004 bankruptcy proceedings were opened against the traditional association CA Bordeaux-Bègles Gironde (champions in 1967 and 1991). At the same time, the rugby team of the multi-discipline club Stade Bordelais rose to the Rugby Pro D2. The latter had become champion seven times before the First World War. In 2005, the leaders of both clubs decided to merge the professional teams; In March 2006 a public limited company was founded for this purpose. The amateur and junior teams will remain separate.

For reasons of tradition, the clubs involved could not initially agree on a short name for the team. The team was given the somewhat bulky name Union Stade Bordelais - Club Athlétique Bordeaux-Bègles Gironde , abbreviated to USB-CABBG. Finally, in May 2008, it was renamed Union Bordeaux Bègles. In 2011 he was promoted to the top 14 league.
