XBill is an open source - computer game , which at the end of 1990 was very popular in the open source movement. The aim of the game is to prevent Bill , a little man with glasses, and his clones from installing the Wingdows computer virus on a large number of computer systems that are already running another operating system. Wingdows is a virus "that was cleverly designed to fool the user into a popular operating system " and thus represents a parody of Microsoft Windows .

The different operating systems (different Linux distributions , BSD , Solaris , SGI IRIX , Apple Macintosh , OS / 2 , Palm OS , GNU Hurd and NeXTStep ) are represented by the corresponding logos on computer screens . When Bill (or one of his clones) has Wingdows installed, he replaces the icon of the original operating system with the Wingdows logo (which is of course the Microsoft Windows logo) and removes the old icon.

Bill can be stopped by "hitting" him with a click of the mouse . The replaced operating systems must be pulled back onto the computer using the mouse. In later levels, computers are also connected by network cables, which means that Wingdows spread faster. Some computers can catch fire in the process and must be extinguished by pulling a bucket of water on them.
