French rugby cup

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The French Rugby Cup ( French Coupe de France ) was a cup competition for rugby union teams in France .

It was initially held from 1906 to 1939, but was then suspended because of the Second World War and reintroduced in 1943. All French teams were eligible to participate, with the best only intervening in the later rounds. The final game in 1951 was so violent that the English Rugby Football Union called for the competition to be canceled. Otherwise, the French national team would be excluded from the Five Nations tournament, to which it was re-admitted in 1939 after a ban of several years. The Fédération Française de Rugby (FFR) complied with this request.

In the mid-1980s, the cup competition was revived on the initiative of the then FFR President Albert Ferrasse. But already after three events he had to be removed again, as the game calendar with the championship and the Yves du Manoir Challenge was already tight; audience interest was also modest. There was a last attempt to revive the cup in 1996 when it was merged with the Challenge Yves du Manoir to form the Trophée Du-Manoir Coupe de France . It continued to exist under various names until 2003.
