IMS International Metal Service SA is a former listed steel trader based in Nanterre near Paris (France). The company was merged with the competitor Jacquet Metals to form Jacquet Metal Service in 2010 ; the IMS brand lives on as the IMS group within Jacquet Metal Service.

Activities and key figures

IMS was active with around 2,000 employees in 27 branches in 17 European countries in the trade in special and stainless steel in the field of high-strength and highly wear-resistant steels, rust, acid and heat-resistant steels and structural steels. Sales in 2009 amounted to 390,000 t with a turnover of EUR 727 million (EUR 1.4 billion in the previous year).

In Germany, IMS was represented by the subsidiary Stappert Spezial-Stahl Handel GmbH in Düsseldorf. Stappert acted as a so-called hub for the group's activities in Scandinavia and Eastern Europe. Stappert also managed the subsidiary Hoselmann Stahl GmbH trading and processing in Hanover. In 2008, the German subsidiaries contributed approx. 21% to the group's total sales.

history

The group emerged from 1970 from the sales activities of the former French steel manufacturer Creusot-Loire . In 1979 the German steel trader Stappert was acquired. The group has been operating under the name International Metal Service since 1980 and was floated on the stock exchange in 1987. In 2004, the successor company of Creusot-Loire, sold Arcelor , its remaining stake in the private equity -Gesellschaft Checkers Capital , which took the company private. In 2006 the company went public again.

From autumn 2008, the also listed but much smaller competitor Jacquet Metals bought a stake of almost 33% in IMS on the stock exchange. On February 3, 2010, Jacquet Metals announced a hostile takeover offer in the form of a share swap for IMS, which IMS initially rejected; however, in March both parties mutually agreed to merge the two companies.
