Julia Schoch (born on May 17, 1974 in Bad Saarow ) is a German writer and translator . She writes novels , stories , essays , radio plays and has worked as a columnist .

Life

Schoch was born as the daughter of an officer and a bookseller in Bad Saarow. She grew up in Eggesin , a small town on the southern bank of the Szczecin Lagoon . In 1986 the family moved back to Potsdam . Schoch attended sports school there in 1987/88. As a helmsman in the "Vierer mit", she and her team became GDR champion. From 1988 to 1992 she attended the extended secondary school "Hermann von Helmholtz" in Potsdam. After leaving school, Schoch studied German and Romance languages at the University of Potsdam , Montpellier and Bucharest . In the nineties she worked alongside her studies in the “Melodie” cinema in Potsdam. Before becoming a freelance writer and translator in 2003, she taught French literature at the University of Potsdam. She is a member of the German PEN Center . Apart from longer stays abroad, she lives in Potsdam with her husband and two children.
