André Gide Prize

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The André Gide Prize of the DVA Foundation was a prize for German-French literary translations. The award was named after André Gide .

history

The André Gide Prize has been awarded every two years since 1998, twice, namely for one translation from German and one from French into the other language. It was awarded for the last time in 2010.

The recipient of the award was the DVA Foundation, established in 1980, which was accepted into the Robert Bosch Foundation in 2007 as a dependent foundation . The prize was last endowed with 10,000 euros each.

The award of the prize was stopped in 2011; for a year there was a successor called the Romain Rolland Prize. In 2016, Andreas Platthaus from the FAZ complained about their attitude, as well as that of the Raymond Aron Prize, which was awarded for translated scientific texts in both languages.

Recently, since autumn 2017, the Bosch Foundation has been promoting a "Literary Bridge Builder" program in general. A future project on this line will be presented from 2018: "Toledo. Translators in the Exchange of Cultures". A German translation fund is involved in this program. The aim of the program will be to build literary bridges between cultures of any source and target language through translators; to promote professional networking that brings translators into exchange with one another and with other actors in the literature business; and to support events that make translators' "cultural vocabulary" accessible to the general public.

Principles

The aim of the foundation awarding the prize was to promote knowledge of the beautiful literature (prose, poetry) of the other language area by honoring excellent translations of a work that either represents the respective national literature to a special degree or the dialogue between the two cultures enriched. Younger translators from the two languages who had already published their first (other) translations could apply .
