Danièle Sallenave (born October 28, 1940 in Angers ) is a French writer , publicist and former university lecturer. She has been a member of the Académie française since 2011 .

Life

Sallenave was born as the daughter of a teacher and a teacher and attended the Lycée in Angers, the Lycée Fénelon in Paris and the École normal supérieure de jeunes filles in Sèvres (a Grande école ). She graduated from the Agrégation (Agrégation de Lettres classiques) in 1964 .

From 1968 to 2001 Sallenave taught literature and film history at the University of Paris-Nanterre .

Since 1975 Sallenave published numerous novels, short stories, travelogues and plays. In addition, she wrote translations from Italian and wrote regularly for the newspaper Le Monde and the magazines Le Messager européen , Les Temps Modernes and Marianne . She was one of the first editors of the progressive literary magazine Digraphe, founded by Jean Ristat in 1974, and from 1976 to 1990 she also worked repeatedly with the director and theater reformer Antoine Vitez.

Since September 2009 she has been designing the weekly program La chronique de Danièle Sallenave on the radio station France Culture .

On April 7, 2011, she was elected to succeed Maurice Druon (30th chair) as the seventh woman in the Académie française .

Public expression of opinion

Your article Fin du communisme. L'hiver des âmes from 1992 aroused criticism. Jean-François Revel criticized the fact that Sallenave sees the victims of communism rather among the people who believed in communism and have now been disappointed, and ignores the real victims of communism, namely many millions of dead.

In 1999 Sallenave criticized the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages , which she saw threatened the unity of the French Republic. This article elicited several critical responses, including from Henri Giordan.

In her journalistic writings Sallenave turns against communitarianism and religious fanaticism and dogmatism of all kinds, but also against an enemy image of Islam and the catchphrase of the clash of cultures .
