location

Pont-de-Crau is a direct suburb of the center of Arles. Despite its geographical proximity, Pont-de-Crau is not only dependent on Arles, but has largely retained its village characteristics. The Canal de Craponne , which is used for irrigation, crosses two drainage canals in Pont-de-Crau. Pont-de-Crau is located immediately east of the center of the city. To the north of the village is Fontvieille , to the east are Moulès and Raphèle-lès-Arles .

history

The first bridge that connected the city with the western ascent to the Plateau de la Crau was built during Roman times . On the one hand, this carried the Via Aurelia and also brought water from the Alpilles into the city. It was destroyed around the 8th century and probably rebuilt in the 12th century. The Canal de Craponne, built by Adam de Craponne , came into being in the 16th century . In 1758, work began on the Route de Marseille , which was supported by a 60-arch bridge. Today it is gone. In 1847 a railway viaduct was built. In 1990 it had to be partially destroyed when the bypass was built.
