Hanns-Josef Ortheil
Hanns-Josef Ortheil (born November 5, 1951 in Cologne , North Rhine-Westphalia ) is a German writer , screenwriter , Germanist and university professor .
Life
Hanns-Josef Ortheil was born as the fifth son of the librarian Maria Katharina Ortheil (1913–1996) and the geodesist and later Federal Railway Director Josef Ortheil (1907–1988) in Cologne. The parents lost two sons during World War II and two sons again in the first few years after the war. In the face of these deaths, Ortheil's mother had become more and more silent and finally mute, so that Ortheil grew up with a speechless mother in his early childhood and stopped speaking for a while at the age of about three. That's why he didn't learn to speak until he was seven. In a television studio talking in the WDR telecast Planet Wissen told Ortheil October 2013, his first sentence was: "Give it to me!" When he wanted to have the ball in the football match between two boys.
A release from the strongly introverted and mutistic child life brought the four-year-old piano lessons, which he initially received from his mother. From 1956 on, Ortheil was taught by pianists and music teachers, such as the pianist and music theorist Erich Forneberg and later by the pianist and Arrau student Daniela Ballek . Ortheil made rapid progress as a pianist and wanted to pursue this career professionally. Massive, recurring tendinitis , during two stays in Rome in the early 1970s, during which he studied at the Roman Conservatory and earned his living as an organist at the Church of Santa Maria dell'Anima, forced him to give up this career aspiration.
After childhood and youth in Cologne, the Westerwald, Wuppertal and Mainz, Ortheil graduated from the Rabanus-Maurus-Gymnasium in Mainz and studied art history first in Rome and later musicology , philosophy, and German at the universities of Mainz, Göttingen, Paris and Rome and comparative literature . During his studies in the seventies he worked as a film and music journalist for the Mainzer " Allgemeine Zeitung " and later (since the eighties) as a columnist and literary critic for the " Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung ", Die Zeit , " Die Welt ", and others . the "Rheinische Merkur", the " Spiegel " and the " Neue Zürcher Zeitung ". In 1976 he received his doctorate with a dissertation on the theory of the novel in the age of the French Revolution at the German Institute of the University of Mainz .
From 1976 to 1982 he was a research assistant there and from 1982 to 1988 university assistant. In 1979 he made his debut as a writer with the novel Fermer , for which he received the first “ Aspects ” literature award from ZDF for “the best debut” of the season. In 1983 he married the publisher Imma Klemm, the granddaughter of the expressionist poet Wilhelm Klemm , to whom he dedicated a monograph . From 1988 to 1990 he was a freelance writer. In 1991 he received a scholarship from the Deutsche Akademie Villa Massimo Rome and since then has been living in Rome more often. During a second stay at Villa Massimo in 1993, Ortheil resumed his previous concert activities and played in private and public settings. In 1990 he was given a lectureship in creative writing and contemporary literature at the University of Hildesheim , where in 1999 he founded the course in " Creative Writing and Cultural Journalism ". This resulted in younger writers, such as Mariana Leky , Paul Brodowsky , Thomas Klupp , Sebastian Polmans , Kevin Kuhn and Leif Randt . In 2003 he became professor for creative writing and cultural journalism in Hildesheim; he now successfully continued the course together with colleagues and employees.
In 2008 Ortheil became the first director of the newly founded "Institute for Literary Writing and Literary Studies" at the University of Hildesheim, which is dedicated to promoting young authors in theory and practice and examining all aspects of writing and writing in research. In addition to teaching at the University of Hildesheim, Ortheil was a poetics lecturer at Washington University in St. Louis / USA and at the universities of Paderborn, Bielefeld, Heidelberg, Zurich and Bamberg. Ortheil is honorary professor at the University of Heidelberg and a member of the PEN Center Germany and the Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts in Munich . He has been the curator of the Gargonza Arts Award since 2012 .
reception
- Regarding Die Berlinreise (2014): “For everyone who has something to do with Berlin, the book is a pleasant memory, whereby the view from the child's perspective is definitely a kick that makes the text interesting. The child's point of view also offers a large number of stimuli and suggestions - in some families the book could become a family reading book. ”( Norbert Kühne , Medienhaus Bauer / Marler Zeitung and 5 other issues, Marl, August 13, 2014).
