Michael Kleeberg (born August 24, 1959 in Stuttgart ) is a German writer , essayist and literary translator . He has been awarded several prizes.

Live and act

Michael Kleeberg spent his youth in Friedrichshafen, Bitz, Böblingen and Hamburg . He studied political science and history at the University of Hamburg and visual communication at the HbK Hamburg. Between 1978 and 1984 he worked as a showman in the Hamburg harbor, as a nursing assistant in the St. Pauli harbor hospital, as a journalist for cinema , rally racing and the NDR.

In 1983 he lived in Rome, 1984 in Berlin-Kreuzberg, 1985/1986 in Amsterdam. In 1986 he moved to Paris , where, in addition to writing, he was co-owner of the Franco-German advertising agency MPI until 1994. From 1996 to 2000 he lived as a freelance writer in Burgundy and since then in Berlin .

Since 2002, based on the writer exchange West-Eastern Divan , he has spent extended periods in the Middle East (Lebanon, Syria, Egypt). Kleeberg also makes the reference in his book The Idiot of the 21st Century: A Divan (2018). In 2017 he caused a public controversy in connection with statements critical of Islam during his Frankfurt poetics lecture, as a result of which the manager of the lecture series distanced herself from Kleeberg's statements.
