Pascal Bruckner (born December 15, 1948 in Paris ) is a French novelist and essayist . Alongside Bernard-Henri Lévy , Alain Finkielkraut and André Glucksmann, he is one of the representatives of the Nouvelle philosophy in France .

Life

Bruckner was born as the son of the teacher Monique Bruckner and the engineer René Bruckner. He studied philosophy in Paris and did his doctorate with Roland Barthes . In 1977 he became known through his book Le nouveau désordre amoureux (German 1979 The new love disorder ), written with Alain Finkielkraut . It is primarily about the rejection of the "sexual revolution" associated with the name Wilhelm Reich , as it was pursued at the same time by other authors, such as the psychoanalyst Janine Chasseguet-Smirgel and the philosopher Michel Foucault . Bruckner polemicizes against Reich's ideas as a “genital tyranny”: Reich wanted to “order a disorder. In fact, he has only given a new face to a very old enslavement. ”Later, in 1997, he described it as“ one of the most important discoveries of our generation ”that“ even a liberated sexuality can become repressive ”.

In 2007, Bruckner held a public debate with the British political scientist Timothy Garton Ash , in which he accused him of giving Muslims living in Europe a special role and standing up for a multiculturalism that weakens Western liberalism. In this context, Bruckner speaks of a paradox of multiculturalism: He grants the same treatment to all communities, but not to the people from whom they are formed, because he denies them the freedom to renounce their own traditions. Instead: recognition of the group, oppression of the individual. Preference for tradition against the will of all those who leave customs and family behind, because, for example, they want to live love according to their own ideas.

The title of his book La Tyrannie de la Pénitence: Essai sur le Masochisme Occidental , published in Paris in 2006 , hits Bruckner's position exactly, the German version, on the other hand, weakens the title: The guilt complex. Bruckner turns against the criticism of the Europeans because of the major crimes they have committed in the past, such as colonialism, genocide and the like. a. These should not be forgotten, but they should not be a reason for the hard-won achievements of the European Enlightenment, e.g. B. human rights, secularism, etc. a., in the name of multiculturalism.

Bruckner has repeatedly criticized the concept of Islamophobia . Against the background of xenophobia, Islam is becoming an inviolable cause for fear that its critics will be accused of racism. This attitude makes believing Muslims victims and releases them from the responsibility of believers of all kinds to be responsible for the deeds of their own religion. He defends the values ​​of secular France and warns of the return of fanaticism.
