Anna Müller (Righteous Among the Nations)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Anna Müller (* July 24, 1880 ; † June 9, 1968 ) was an Austrian gardener who, together with her son Konstantin, saved several Jews from deportation in her home town of Vienna during the Nazi era . In 1974 both were given the title of “ Righteous Among the Nations ”.

Life and meaning

Anna Müller was the mother of the Viennese postal worker Konstantin Müller and the owner of a nursery. Together with her son, she helped many Jews with money, food, clothing and in other ways until the Jews were deported to the death camps. For example, in 1942 they made it possible for the Jew Gerti Stern to leave Austria and save herself from deportation. In 1942 she took in Julia Schapira, a Jew who had already been registered for deportation to Poland. One day Julia Schapira was discovered by the Gestapo , but with a lot of luck and good connections Konstantin was able to thwart her deportation to Poland and she was sent to a camp in Vienna.

When Julia Schapira and another Jew informed Anna Müller of their situation, she decided to give the two Jewish women shelter in their house. She hid them from 1942 to 1945 despite the impending mortal danger and took care of everything they needed. Since the Gestapo was often active in their vicinity, they often changed hiding places. The hidden Jewish women experienced the liberation.

In 1974 Anna Müller and her son were awarded the "Righteous of the Nations" Medal of Honor in Yad Vashem .

In 2012, Anna-Müller-Strasse in Vienna- Donaustadt (22nd district) was named after her.
