Dame Flora McKenzie Robson , DBE (born March 28, 1902 in South Shields , Durham , † July 7, 1984 in Brighton , East Sussex ) was a British theater and film actress .

life and career

Flora Robson was one of Britain's preeminent stage actresses for over 60 years. She first attracted attention as a film actress in 1934 when she portrayed Tsarina Elisabeth in Catherine the Great . In the following decades Robson was successful as a character actress in British and American films. One of her best-known roles was the portrayal of the British Queen Elizabeth I in Fire over England in 1937 . She played that role again three years later in Hollywood adventure strips The Sea Hawk alongside Errol Flynn . Her other well-known film roles include the narrator Ellen Dean in William Wyler's literary film adaptation Sturmhöhe (1939) with Laurence Olivier and Merle Oberon and the nun Philippa in The Black Narcissus (1947) alongside Deborah Kerr .

She was best known for her dramatic and emotional film and theater appearances. In 1947, Robson received her only Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her supporting role as a Haitian maid in Destiny Game . Her late film roles included the murderous maid Miss Milchrest in the Miss Marple film The Wax Bouquet (1963) and the Miss Binns in John Ford's last film work Seven Women (1966). From the 1950s she also played regularly on television. She last appeared in front of the camera in 1981 in Clash of the Titans . Robson was never married and had no children.
