action

In 1587 the Kingdom of England is in danger of being overtaken by Spain as the most powerful nation . Queen Elisabeth , loved by the people, must be very skilled in diplomatic negotiations with Spain. On the one hand, it is important to maintain friendship with the Spanish King Philip . On the other hand, the English ships must be protected. Among the seamen is Sir Francis Drake , who, as a privateer, arrests and plunders Spanish ships. The Queen's closest advisers are Lord Treasurer Burleigh and her longtime admirer, Robert Dudley , the Earl of Leicester . The treasurer's daughter, Cynthia, also belongs to the court , and because of her beauty, the aging Elisabeth becomes increasingly jealous.

While Elisabeth is negotiating with the Spanish ambassador, a battle breaks out between the Spanish fleet under Don Miguel and the English under Sir Richard Ingolby. Miguel and Ingolby are old friends. When the Spanish defeated the English, Miguel arranged the escape of Michael Ingolby, Sir Richard's son. The wounded Michael manages to get to the Spanish shore and is looked after by Miguel's daughter Elena, who soon falls in love with the young Englishman.

After a few months Michael will be restored. However, he is dissatisfied because he is separated from his lover, Cynthia. Yet he is not insensitive to Elena's charms. After a while, Miguel comes to Michael and informs him of his father's execution. Michael leaves his previous protector in horror and flees to England. He receives an audience with the queen and swears eternal loyalty to her if she would fight the Spanish Armada by all means. The Queen is undecided, but when her spy at the Spanish court, Hillary Vane, is killed, she decides to put Michael's loyalty to the test. He is supposed to get papers on which the names of Vanes helpers and fellow spies are recorded.

Disguised as Vane, Michael travels to the court of the Spanish king. There he comes across papers that prove an assassination conspiracy against Queen Elisabeth. He meets Elena, who is married to the steward Don Pedro. Elena doesn't reveal Michael as long as she can, but in the end she has to tell her husband the truth about Michael. The Spanish king has him locked up, but Pedro helps him to escape so that his wife cannot be accused of being a traitor. While Michael travels back to England, the Spanish Armada is sailing towards England. Elisabeth gathers her army in Tilbury and swears them there with her so-called Tilbury speech . Michael reveals the assassin's plans to her there. Michael is knighted and the accused conspirators are sentenced to go on a dangerous mission with him. Michael is supposed to stop the Spanish Armada.

He and the conspirators succeed. They reached the Spanish ships in small boats and set them on fire. You can safely reach mainland England. Elisabeth allows Michael's wedding to Cynthia. Then she sadly has all the mirrors removed from the palace.
