life and career

Morton Selten was born Morton Richard Stubbs in 1860 and was officially the son of Morton Stubbs. According to persistent rumors, however, Selten was in truth the illegitimate son of the then 19-year-old Prince of Wales , Edward VII , who later became King of Great Britain. Selten's origins were "an open secret among his fellow actors in the 1930s," director Michael Powell also reported about it in an interview in 1988.

Morton Selten began his long and successful stage career in 1878, working in both England and the United States. On Broadway in New York , between 1889 and 1918, he played in almost 30 theater productions, both in comedies and in dramas. In 1920 he made his film debut alongside Nora Swinburne in the British silent film Branded . Until his death he appeared in a total of 25 cinema productions, where he often played humorous aristocrats. In the historical film Fire Over England (1937) he took on a prominent role as advisor to the Queen at the side of Flora Robson , Laurence Olivier and Vivien Leigh . At the end of the 1930s, he was considered to be the oldest film star in his country. Selten played his last role in the adventure classic The Thief of Baghdad as the ancient, wise king of the land of legend. He died shortly after his scenes were filmed at the age of 79, and the film only premiered over a year after his death.
