A ghost goes to America (Original: The Ghost Goes West ) is a British comedy film directed by René Clair from 1935 with Robert Donat and Jean Parker in the leading roles.

action

In 1761 the Scots went to war against the English. The McLaggans go to the Glouries to get more people. Old Glourie's son, however, has a reputation for being a womanizer, and that is what the McLaggans make fun of. Out of sheer anger, old Glourie sends his son into battle against the English, but primarily against the McLaggans.

When the young Murdoch Glourie starts an affair with a shepherdess during the battle, he is chased away by the McLaggans. He flees behind a powder keg, which explodes immediately afterwards. Because of the shame that Murdoch Glourie brought on the family, he has to haunt until a McLaggan has apologized.

200 years later, the Glouries descendant, Donald Glourie, is heavily in debt. He sells the castle to the rich food king Mr. Martin. Donald immediately falls in love with Mr. Martin's beautiful daughter, Peggy Martin. She is enthusiastic about the castle and Donald, although she thinks the castle ghost is him because of the similarity.

The Martins have the castle dismantled and transported to America. On the crossing the ghost shows up and under pressure from his wife, Mr. Martin reverses the deal. Ed Bigelow, a competitor of Mr. Martin, smells big business and wants the castle. Mr. Martin can just prevent that and buys the lock again.

In America, the arrival of the spirit is raised on a grand scale. Since the ghost no longer shows up in America, Donald Glourie is supposed to play the ghost and learn something about the true feelings of Peggy Martin, who still loves him. He changes clothes and returns as Donald and is insulted by Ed Bigelow. But he learns that Bigelow is the last descendant of the McLaggans. The ghost reappears, chasing Bigelow and forcing him to apologize. The ghost then returns to its ancestors, and Donald Glourie and Peggy Martin are a couple.
