action
Madame Anaïs de Beauperthuis meets with Lieutenant Tavernier for a secret tête-à-tête. Fadinard happens to be passing by with his carriage on the way to his wedding ceremony. During a short rest, the horse eats the lady's fashionable straw hat. In order not to embarrass Madame de Beauperthuis in front of her husband, Fadinard promises to get an identical hat as a replacement.
Fearing that Fadinard might not keep his promise, Madame de Beauperthuis now accompanies Fadinard to his bride. This leads to countless entanglements and misunderstandings: Lieutenant Tavernier threatens Fadinard with a duel if he can't find a suitable hat, and Helene - his bride - is jealous because of the constant presence of Madame de Beauperthuis.
