Maurice Desfassiaux

Henri Maurice Desfassiaux (born February 1, 1886 in Paris , † December 22, 1956 in Deuil-la-Barre ) was a French cameraman .

Live and act

Born in Paris, he learned his trade from scratch at the production company Pathé and began his active work as a camera assistant. He quickly rose to the position of chief cameraman and in this position was already shooting short silent films before the First World War, mostly productions by the film pioneer Henri Andréani. The outbreak of war in 1914 interrupted his work and he was drafted.

Desfassiaux's artistically most challenging years were the 1920s, when he cooperated with a number of well-known filmmakers who embarked on avant-garde and experimental paths in film art. Desfassiaux was behind the camera in several early works by later celebrated filmmakers such as René Clair , Jean Renoir , Jean Epstein and Jacques Feyder . Although still active in the 1930s, Maurice Desfassiaux quickly lost its importance at the beginning of the sound film age. As a result of the occupation of his homeland by the Wehrmacht in 1940, the Parisian could no longer work in the profession he had learned.
