Jim Gérald

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jim Gérald , actually Gérald Ernest Cuenot , (born July 4, 1889 in Paris , France , † July 2, 1958 there ) was a French actor .

Live and act

As a young man, Jim Gérald hitchhiked around the world, spending a while in the Wild West . Back in Paris, Gérald appeared in front of the camera for the first time in 1911. Before he finally committed himself to film work in 1923, he had earned his living as a cowboy, café singer, riding instructor and clown.

His collaboration with the young director René Clair , who gave him leading roles on several occasions, made Jim Gérald famous during the silent film era . During the transition from silent to talkies , the stocky Parisian stayed in Germany and appeared in a number of French versions of German films in the early 1930s. In the French version of Fritz Lang's Das Testament des Dr. Mabuse , he played one of the main roles, Commissioner Lohmann.

Since 1933 he has also appeared in English-language films from time to time, initially in British and, after 1945, in American productions with European locations. Gérald, who stood in front of the camera until shortly before his death, had to be content with tiny supporting roles, which often had little more than batch format.
