Don't look back (Original title: High Tide at Noon ) is a British literary film adaptation by director Philip Leacock from 1957 with Betta St. John , William Sylvester , Michael Craig and Flora Robson in the lead roles. The film was produced by the Rank Organization based on the novel "High Tide at Noon" by Elisabeth Ogilvie .
action
After returning to her homeland, a robust but isolated island near Nova Scotia , Joanna, the daughter of the local patriarch who owns large parts of the island and who rents small parts of it to local fishermen, soon has to defend herself from the favor of three bachelors - the rebel Simon Breck, the former friend Nils and the poetic newcomer Alec Douglas.
She begins a romance with one of the three fishermen. The two soon marry, but their husband's addiction to gambling drives the young couple into financial ruin. It did not remain with this one misfortune and since the local lobster stocks are dwindling more and more due to overfishing and the supply of the fishermen and the local population is no longer guaranteed, the inhabitants of the island have to face their economic hardship and leave the island.
Reviews
“The fortunes of a fishing family on a barren island of Nova Scotia. As the lobster catch dropped, tensions increased among residents. The daughter of the family marries a fisherman who is addicted to gambling and who is killed in an accident at sea. Years later, she returns to the now deserted island. Boring sentimental homeland film in the Canadian landscape. "
"The sappy story is made bearable by a lively, varied recording technique."
