Camel Daoud
Kamel Daoud (born June 17, 1970 in Mostaganem , Algeria ) is an Algerian journalist and author who writes in French .
Life
Daoud is the son of a police officer and was the only child in the family to study. After studying mathematics , he studied literature at the University of Oran . In 1994 he went to the French-language daily Le Quotidien d'Oran , where he was editor-in-chief for eight years. During this time he wrote his first book Raina raïkoum (Our opinion, your opinion). He developed and his opinions from conservative to biting , especially towards the Algerian rulers under Abdelaziz Bouteflika . His articles appeared uncensored on Facebook , and he also wrote for the electronic journal Algérie-focus and for Slate Afrique .
Daoud lives and works in Oran . He has two children and is divorced.
In recent years Daoud has published six other works, including short stories and in 2014 the novel Meursault, contre-enquête (German 2016: Der Fall Meursault - Eine Gegenendarstellung ), which was inspired by the novel Der Fremde by Albert Camus . The novel polarized: Tobias Lehmkuhl criticized the novel in the Süddeutsche Zeitung for its clumsy language and the counter-story that the author's protagonist claims to tell as monologizing talk. Dirk Fuhrig praised the novel on Deutschlandradio Kultur as “one of the most stimulating and most important (...) about the relationship between the West and the Arab world. Both because of its intercultural dimension and because of its fine literary method. ”In 2014 he was shortlisted for France's most important literary prize, the Prix Goncourt , and was finally awarded in 2015 in its Best Debut Novel category.
criticism
In Le Monde, Daoud was critical of the sexual assault on New Year's Eve 2015/16 in Cologne by migrants from the Maghreb. Among other things, he complained about the naivety of the West, which downplayed the contrasts between Western and Islamic culture. He was then accused by a group of nineteen French intellectuals of inciting Islamophobia and supporting Pegida . Previously because of his comments in the Quotidien d'Oran with a fatwa demonstrates Daoud subsequently announced to withdraw from journalism.
