Marc Augé

Marc Augé (born September 2, 1935 in Poitiers , Vienne ) is a French ethnologist and anthropologist .

Live and act

Augé was director of the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (EHESS), the University of Social Sciences in Paris . In the 1970s and 1980s he undertook various research trips to Africa , in particular to the Ivory Coast and Togo , as well as to Latin America .

Later, his considerations increasingly turned to modern Western society. Among other things, his theory of non-places ( non-lieux ) became known. Here he denied spaces in the built environment, primarily in urban areas, their quality as places in the anthropological sense due to their function as transit spaces and the lack of human interaction .

His extensive work has only been partially translated into German.
