Gerardo Marotta (born April 26, 1927 in Naples ; † January 25, 2017 there ) was an Italian lawyer and patron of philosophy .

Life

Marotta studied law at the University of Naples and completed his studies with a legal philosophical thesis on the concept of the state in classical German philosophy and in left Hegelianism. He became interested in philosophy, history and literature from an early age and in the post-war period frequented the Istituto Italiano per gli Studi Storici founded by Benedetto Croce . Based on this model, he founded the Istituto Italiano per gli Studi Filosofici in 1975 , which has established itself as one of the most famous international research institutions for philosophy and which Marotta was president for decades.

Honors

Gerardo Marotta has received numerous awards and honorary doctorates for his services to philosophy, including from Bielefeld University (1988), Erasmus University Rotterdam (1988), Paris III- Sorbonne Nouvelle University (1996) and Pavia University (2000 ) and the University of Bucharest (2000). Marotta was laureate of the Goethe Medal (2001) and the Legion of Honor of the French Republic ( Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur , 2003) and a member of the Accademia Pontaniana in Naples.
