Hermann Walther von der Dunk (born October 9, 1928 in Bonn ; † August 22, 2018 in Bilthoven ) was a Dutch historian and cultural scientist of German origin. He was Professor Emeritus of Contemporary History at the University of Utrecht and the University of Nijmegen .

Life

Von der Dunk was a son of Heinrich M. von der Dunk and Ilse Loeb. His father couldn't find a job in National Socialist Germany because he was married to a Jewish woman. The family fled to the Netherlands in 1937 , where the father got a job as a teacher at the Werkplaats Kindergemeenschap in Bilthoven under the direction of the reform pedagogue Kees Boeke . Von der Dunk Junior studied history with the internationally known historian Pieter Geyl and then conducted research at the Institute for European History in Mainz . In 1966 he received his doctorate in Utrecht with the dissertation "The German Vormärz and Belgium, 1830-1848". A year later he was appointed professor of history at the same university. In 1990 he retired .

Von der Dunk published numerous monographs and specialist articles in newspapers and national and international journals. He was the author of numerous books and wrote regularly for daily and weekly newspapers. In 1995 he received the Goethe Medal .

Von der Dunk is the father of the cultural historian Thomas von der Dunk and the telecommunications lawyer Frans von der Dunk . He died in Bilthoven at the age of 89.
