Dmytro Satonskyj

Dmytro Wolodymyrowytsch Satonskyj (Ukrainian Дмитро Володимирович Затонський, Russian Дмитрий Владимирович Затонский, Dmitry Vladimirovich Satonski ; * 2. July 1922 , Odessa , Ukrainian SSR , USSR , † 7. July 2009 , Kiev , Ukraine ) was a Ukrainian literary scholar and specialist in German .

Life

Dmytro Satonskyj was a son of the Ukrainian political functionary Volodymyr Satonskyj . He was shot dead in 1938 during the Great Terror .

Dmytro Satonskyj studied literature at the Taras Shevchenko University of Kiev and graduated in 1950. He became a research assistant at the Taras Shevchenko Literature Institute of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine , where he founded the Department of Foreign Literature. He headed this from 1962 to 1974. Afterwards he was director of the literature institute.

In 1971 he came to the Federal Republic of Germany for a three-month stay , where he met important authors and critics such as Heinrich Böll and Marcel Reich-Ranicki . Since 1974 he has been a board member of the Goethe Society in Weimar . In 1990 he became an academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. In 2005 he received the Goethe Medal .
